Preparing for an Edmonton Apartment or Condo Move

Apartment and condo moves have their own challenges: shared elevators, building rules, limited parking and hallways that weren't designed for a king-size bed frame. A little planning with your building and your movers makes a big difference.
Building rules, elevators and parking
Every building is different, so ask the property manager or condo board at both your old and new buildings:
- Hours: are there set move-in and move-out hours, or days when moves aren't allowed?
- Elevator: does it need to be booked, and is there a moving deposit or fee? A reserved elevator is the single biggest time-saver in a high-rise move, so book your full moving window plus a buffer, and align both buildings' bookings with your movers' timing.
- Entrance and protection: is there a loading dock or move entrance, and are elevator pads or wall protection required?
- Truck parking: where can a moving truck stop, how close to the entrance, and can visitor stalls be reserved? A shorter walk from the truck means a faster, safer move.
- Paperwork: does the building need anything from your moving company in advance?
Get the answers in writing if you can, and share them with your movers.

Measure before moving day
- Measure large furniture against doorways, hallway turns and the elevator interior, including its height.
- Take apart bed frames, tables and shelving where you can and bag the hardware — or ask us to take apart and reassemble them as part of your moving quote.
- If something clearly won't fit in the new place, decide early: sell it, donate it, or have it hauled away.
Pack smart for small spaces
- Use smaller boxes for heavy items like books, so each box stays manageable.
- Stage packed boxes near the door, but keep a clear path through the unit and hallway.
- Label boxes by room and contents, and number them so you can check that everything arrived.
- Keep keys, fobs, parking passes and building contacts in your "first day" bag.
Checklist: details to send your movers
When you request a moving quote, include:
- Both addresses, with floor and unit numbers.
- Elevator or stairs at each building, and your elevator booking times.
- Where the truck can park, and the distance to the entrance or loading area.
- Building rules on moving hours, entrances or protection.
- Large, heavy or fragile items, with photos if possible.
- Furniture you'd like taken apart and reassembled.
On moving day
- Meet the crew at the entrance and show them the route and the elevator.
- Keep hallways clear, and be considerate of neighbours sharing the space.
- Do a final walk-through of every closet, cabinet, storage locker and balcony.
- Return keys and fobs as your building requires, and note any final inspection time.
Downsizing for a smaller space?
Moving from a house to a condo usually means letting go of some furniture. Clearing it out before moving day saves time and truck space. See our cleanout checklist and the full Edmonton moving checklist.
