Moving in Edmonton: A Practical Checklist Before Moving Day

Most moving-day stress comes from decisions left until the truck arrives. Whether you're moving across Edmonton, out to St. Albert or Sherwood Park, or taking on a long-distance move, this checklist spreads the work out so moving day is mostly lifting and driving.
Six to eight weeks before: set the plan
- Pick your date and a backup. Month-end and weekends are the busiest times for Edmonton movers, so request those dates early.
- Request quotes. A moving company can only quote accurately with the right details. See the list below.
- Declutter first. Everything you move takes time and truck space. Sell, donate or remove what you don't want before packing starts. A garage or basement cleanout is a good place to begin.
- Measure the big pieces. Check sofas, beds, dressers and appliances against doorways, stairwells and elevators at both homes.
What movers need for an accurate quote
The more your movers know up front, the fewer surprises on the day. Have these ready when you request a moving quote:
- Pickup and destination addresses, including unit numbers.
- Home size: number of bedrooms, or a rough list of furniture and boxes.
- Access at both ends: stairs, elevators, long walks from parking, tight driveways.
- Heavy, fragile or high-value items, such as a piano, a safe, glass tables or artwork.
- How flexible your date is.
- Photos of large items or tricky spots. They help more than descriptions.

Two to three weeks before: pack and book
- Pack what you won't need: seasonal clothes, books, decor and spare kitchenware.
- Label every box with its destination room and a short list of what's inside. Mark fragile boxes clearly on more than one side.
- Book building logistics. If you live in an apartment or condo, reserve the elevator and loading area. Our apartment and condo moving guide covers this in detail.
- Transfer utilities and internet so service ends at the old place and starts at the new one on the right days.
- Update your address with your bank, employer, insurance and other accounts, and arrange mail forwarding if you need it.
The week of your move
- Confirm the date, arrival window and both addresses with your movers.
- Take apart furniture you can disassemble, and bag and tape the screws to the matching piece — or ask us to take apart and reassemble beds, tables and similar pieces as part of your moving quote.
- Empty, unplug and defrost the fridge and freezer ahead of time, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Pack a "first night" box: chargers, medications, toiletries, bedding, a change of clothes, basic tools and snacks.
- Keep passports, important documents, jewellery and other valuables with you rather than on the truck.
- Plan where the truck will park at both homes, and ask about loading zones or permits if street parking is tight.
Moving day checklist
- Clear walkways, stairs and hallways. In Edmonton winters, shovel and salt the driveway and steps before the crew arrives.
- Keep kids and pets in a quiet room or with a sitter.
- Walk through with the crew lead: what's going, what's staying, and anything that needs extra care.
- Do a final sweep of closets, cupboards, the garage and the basement before the truck leaves.
- At the new home, point the crew to each room so boxes land in the right place the first time.
Planning a long-distance move?
Long-distance moving needs a little more lead time. Enter your destination on the form as early as you can. We'll confirm availability and quote the trip before anything is booked.

Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I book movers in Edmonton?
As early as you can, especially for month-end and weekend dates, which fill first. Sending a request doesn't book anything. Your date is confirmed only when we confirm it with you.
Do you move to and from communities outside Edmonton?
Yes. We serve Edmonton and all surrounding communities, including St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc and Beaumont, and we also handle longer-distance moves.
What's the best way to get an accurate moving quote?
Give us both addresses, your home size, access details like stairs or elevators, and any heavy or fragile items. Photos of large pieces help a lot.
